Mirehouse
Lying between mountain, fell and lakeshore, Mirehouse is a beautiful family home. For 350 years Mirehouse and its gardens have given peaceful enjoyment to its owners and their visitors. The gardens described as “a so civil wilderness” enhance the stunning, natural Lake District landscape and delight the young and not so young.
Follow the nature trail keeping a look out for badgers and deer. Burn off excess energy at any of the four family play areas and heather maze or spend a moment of quiet in the sheltered Bee Garden.
Children can hunt for owls as the pass through the rooms and passageways at Mirehouse or play in the Victorian nursery, including having a chance to go on a rocking horse.
Experience the unique literary connections linked to Mirehouse – Alfred Tennyson and Thomas Carlyle delighted in their visits to Mirehouse. View the unusual private collections of letters from Wordsworth, photographs by Julia Margaret Cameron and paintings by Samuel Lawrence then head out on the poetry walk.
Fill up on hearty, homemade lunches and cakes in the intriguing Old Sawmill Tearoom, full of old forestry tools.
