The Arts

Classic to contemporary

Learn about the ethos of the Arts & Crafts Movement and see its legacy of varied and beautiful artefacts at Blackwell, The Arts & Crafts House. Several of its first floor rooms are used as galleries, and exhibitions showcasing both contemporary and historical craft work are held throughout the year.

Take the Fine Arts Hall Tour and discover the history of Holker Hall through the paintings and objects d'art including a fine collection of family and royal portraits. Indulge in some open air theatre with classic performances take full advantage of the grounds throughout the summer.

Stumble upon ceramic masterpieces as you stroll through the grounds of Hutton-in-the-Forest during Potfest in the Park - the annual International ceramics festival. Watch characters from years gone by bring the place to life with open air Shakespeare.

Be transported to the orient in the dramatic Chinese room at Dalemain. The woodland scene on the walls is alive with oriental pheasants, trees, birds and insects. The decorated wallpaper was hand-painted in china and brought to the UK.

Marvel at the intricacy of the earliest English patchwork at Levens Hall or the grand leather wall covering in the dining room.

Muncaster's collection of needle works, silver, oriental carpets, portraits and over 6000 books will keep you occupied for a day.

Literary giants

Get a sneak peak into the lives of famous artists and literary giants at Mirehouse. Manuscripts of Wordsworth and Robert Southey are on show along with personal letters and papers from the likes of Francis Bacon and Tennyson.

Rydal Mount was the much loved home of William Wordsworth. Steal into his attic study or peruse the collection of first editions of the poets work.
